February Is Google Places Month – Join Us!

February is Google Places Month for Richmond Indiana

Center City Development Corp. and Richmond Social have declared February as the month we get all local businesses on the map!  Google Maps that is.  We are making a group effort to get all local business to claim their business listing on Google places during the month of February 2012.

1.  CLAIM YOUR LISTING or LEAVE A REVIEW

2.  TELL US YOU DID IT

What is Google Places? Google Places is a free search tool offered by Google.  A business listing on Google Places allows customers to find you, get directions, get more information about your business, etc.  Google automatically lists businesses with default information.  They also offer businesses the option to “claim” the listing and make it more complete.  When you claim your listing, you can add photos, videos, and offers to show customers why they’ll want to choose you. You can also highlight special promotions, post live updates, and respond to reviews.  Did we mention it’s free?

Why Should I Care?  According to Google: 97% of consumers search for local businesses online.   What do your customers find when they google your product or service?  Make sure they find you.  Once you own your listing you can also gain insight on how people search for you, how many click on your information and what keywords they use to find you.

How do I do it?  Go to www.Google.com/places  – the tool guides you through.  If you do not have a google account, you will need to set one up.  A couple of tips:

  1. Log into Google Places(or create a new account if you don’t have one).
  2. Claim your business listing (the tool will allow you to search for your business by phone number).
  3. If no listing for your business exists:  Create one.  If a basic one already exists:  Claim it.
  4. Once you fill out  your information Google will ask you to verify that you really own the information.  They will offer you at least one of these options:  (1) Google will call your business number and give you a pin number to enter online and or (2) Google will mail you a post card (regular postal mail) with a pin number on it.  The postcard can take 2-3 weeks to arrive.  Once you receive that you just log back in and enter the pin number to verify your listing.

Can’t get it to work?  Feel like you need hands on help?  Leave a comment below and let others in our group offer advice.  You can also sign up to attend the next Education Series from Center City for hands on help on Feb 29.  Sign up at:  http://centercityeducationalseries.eventbrite.com/

What if we have already claimed ours?  Great!  You can still participate!  Take the time to leave a review on Google Places for local businesses that you love.  You can also help spread the word about this effort to other local business.
